Hartlepool's Victorian buildings compared to their modern counterparts
Our town, Hartlepool, grew quickly in Victorian times. We have looked at some of the Victorian buildings which can still be seen in Hartlepool today and we compared them with modern buildings.
We have discovered that Victorian buildings in Hartlepool have a lot of decoration on the bricks, which are normally around the doors and windows. Also windows are high because they wanted to stop the sun glaring through. The shape of the houses is very rectangular, apart from the roofs which are often shaped like a pyramid. The windows have a lot of panes of glass and the frames of the the doors and windows are made of wood.
On the left is Hartlepool Civic Centre built in the 1980s and 1990s. It replaced the Victorian Municipal Buildings which were opened in 1879. You can see how buildings have changed.

Notice how high Jesmond Road School is. Look at the roof line. What other differences can you see?
Some people say Victorian buildings were built to last . The modern buildings don't look as strong. They also look very plain but Victorian buildings have colourful and patterned brickwork.

The Victorian buildings in Hartlepool are very decorative and have large often arched windows. There are lots of patterns and coloured bricks round the doorways. the buildins we looked at are at least 3 or 4 stories high.. The modern hotel has only 2 stories and the window frames are plastic.
