The Grange Tapestry Project

The idea of a 'Grange Tapestry' came from a visit to Durham Cathedral where Mrs Wilson and Mrs Brooks saw the Millennium Tapestry on display. This was made by thousands of schoolchildren around Britain.

Y6 children were asked to sketch ideas which they thought represented Grange School and Hartlepool itself. We then decided on the ones we would put on the final tapestry.

We wanted the big centre panel to show our school in the middle of the 1998 fire and as it is now. We then chose Hartley our mascot, the Hartlepool hung monkey, a Hartlepool United footballer, a lighthouse to show our seaside connection, Hartlepool Art Gallery, the Hartlepool crest, lots of happy faces and an American aircraft carrier to show our links with David Nichols.

Each year group then did part of our tapestry.

Year 6 made the two difficult centre panels about our school.

A lot of this was done by the old 'hooky mat' method.

Year 5 made a beautiful scene of the Art Gallery.

Year 4 carefully stitched our mascot Hartley.

Year 3 spent a lot of time completing an image of a footballer.

(We can also proudly say that Adam Boyd who is doing well for Hartlepool United came to Grange!)

Year 2 worked really hard to make the town crest.

Year 1 made a lovely picture of the lighthouse on Hartlepool Headland.

Reception and Nursery made all the happy faces.
