The Glass Centre in Sunderland

We made our own glass paperweights.

First we had to make a mould in a sand tin.

Here we are using wooden moulds of different shapes. These had to be placed in the tin, surrounded with sand and pushed down firmly

We then had to remove the moulds carefully!
The last stage was to add coloured sand, pieces of metal and decorations which were placed in the mould we had made. This would form our pattern at the bottom of the paperweight

Once this was complete we watched as the glass blowers poured molten glass into our moulds. They were then put in a very hot oven to cool slowly. Otherwise they cool at room temperature and this would be to quick, then the glass would just shatter.

Here are some glass ornaments which were on display in the centres shop. There were lots of beautiful items for sale including jewellery. We had a lovely day, it was very interesting and we learnt a lot

Bedes World

We looked around a reconstructed Anglo-Saxon village. Our guide talked to us about what it would be like to live and work in the time of Bede.
We visited the farm and looked at the kinds of animals that would be kept for food, milk and used in farming.
How were the great manuscripts made? What sort of tools did a monastic scribe use? Items such as a stylus, a lunellum and prepared calf-skin. We all had a try at writing in script using a real quill pen and ink. We blotted out script with blotting paper to stop it from smudging. Haven't we done well!

We also dressed up in the same kind of clothes that would have been worn by the Anglo Saxons. They look quite smart don't you think?

Summerhill Visitors Centre

We began our day inside making mobiles from old compact discs, this was good fun. The disc was the body of a fish which we decorated with card and sticky paper.

We then had our lunch and a short play in the adventure playground

Here we now getting ready for our orienteering session.
Everyone's studying what we need to do first. All deep in thought!

Were do we begin!!

We were quite exhausted by the end of the day!
