Hello!Hartley - our school mascot

Welcome to our school mascot's 'home page'

Our school mascot is called Hartley, he's a cute furry english bulldog who has admirable qualities like courage and commitment. He's a big part of our school and is in the forefront of our reward system for good behaviour and rewarding a job that's been well done.

In February 1998, Hartley was presented as a token of friendship and lucky mascot to what was then the U.S. Navy's newest aircraft carrier the USS John C Stennis. He was a lucky bulldog because he then went on to sail around the world on the Stennis' maiden cruise, but like a real friend, he's stayed in touch with our school and many others around the world and through Hartley and Nick we've learned geography, mapping skills, and maths - all in a real context. We've also learned about different cultures in various parts of the world too.

'Master Chief Hartley' as he's known got around on that big ship, and he did lots of different jobs, so we got an idea of how important teamwork is.

He has schools from around the globe dropping in to view his logbook - the 'doglog', to see what he's been up to.

At the end of his maiden voyage, Hartley had a tour of duty with the CIA and helped out the Secret Service before returning to the navy and his old shipmate Ensign David Nichols aboard the USS Saipan.

All three stories are here for you to read and enjoy.

After his training, it turned out that Hartley is a good sailor - and all good sailor's know how to navigate, and you can do that too as you click on the names on the left of this screen to read the stories.
