Times Tables Information

At Grange Primary School, we want our children to achieve factual fluency meaning they can recall multiplication facts easily and over a long time. To achieve this, times tables sessions are now integrated into the school timetable and happen separate to the main maths lesson at least 4 times per week for 15 minutes for some year groups (see the table below). The focus of these lessons is to develop conceptual fluency using 12 X 12 grids and manipulatives which allow children to explore patterns and structures in times tables.

We want children to not only recall 4 X 7 = 28 but to also know commutative and inverse facts as well as doubling, halving and scaling. Eg. If I know 4 X 7 = 28 then I know 4 X 70 = 280 and 4 X 0.7 is 2.8. We also want children to understand the distributive law e.g. (3 X 7) + (1 X 7) = 4 X 7.

We use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) to practice and assess children's times tables knowledge in school and this site can also be accessed from home. For more information on this click this link: Support for Parents.

Children who have not secured fluency with times tables facts will access support to help them to master the times tables facts for their year group.
