Maths

As a school, we use a Mastery approach to teaching maths. Mastery of maths is when a concept or skill can be applied over time in lots of ways and to unfamiliar situations.

Maths lessons at Grange involve the use of concrete objects, such as cubes and counters, to give children lots of opportunities to really understand the new skills they are developing. They then represent their ideas in pictures before moving on to numbers and symbols. There is also a lot of emphasis on vocabulary, discussion and group work, to make sure that our children are able to explain their learning and find ways to check their answers.

An important part of this approach is to study key ideas in greater depth, particularly number and place value. Children then use their knowledge to solve problems and puzzles to show that they understand how to apply their learning in a variety of ways.

To really ‘master’ maths, children need to be very secure with key facts such as number bonds and times tables. We would appreciate your support in making sure that your children are frequently practising these skills at home.
