Maths

Week 1  - Counting

Objective - To recognise zero as an empty set.

This week the children have explored recognising and writing the symbol for zero.

Number formation phrase for 0
Around and around and around we go, when we get home we have a zero.

Vocabulary to use at home
Zero, empty, none, nothing, fewer than, less than, more than.

Week 2 - Counting and Ordering

Objectives - To count to 10 forwards and backwards

To be able to name positions and understand ordinal numbers.

This week we have continued to use the counting stick to support our counting forwards and backwards within 10.  To develop their understanding, we asked the children these questions:
- Which number comes after ....?'

- Which number comes before ...?'

- Which number comes between ..... and .....?'

We read 'The Loo Queue' by Nicholas Allan which helped us to become familiar with positions in a queue.

Vocabulary to use at home
1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, last, in between, before, after, in front, behind.

Week 3 - Counting

Objectives - To represent numbers on a five and ten frame.

                      To write numbers to 10
To match number names to numerals and to representations on 10 frames                        up to 10.

The children in reception are familiar with the five frame but this week we have moved on to using a ten frame. The children are working hard to recognise quantities on the five frame immediately; some children have to count so they know how many counters are on the frames.

This week we have worked hard to form numbers correctly using our number formation phrases. Use the link below to access a PDF of our number formation phrases to support your child at home.

Vocabulary to use at home
Five frame, ten frame, same, different, how many, more, less, fewer

Week 4 - Addition

Objective - To use a counting all strategy to combine two sets up to ten.

This week we have moved onto addition within 10, particularly focusing on addition facts for 5, 6 and 7. We encouraged the children to use the strategy of counting all the compare bears so that they could accurately say how many bears there were altogether. This relies on careful counting and the children understanding that the two groups had to be combined to find a total. We even introduced equations (5 + 2 = 7) and the language of add and equals.

Vocabulary to use at home
Sets, how many, altogether, counting, total, equals, add

Week 5

Objectives - To compare quantity. To count on and back to find 1 more and 1 fewer (1 less).

To be able to order numbers to 10

The children have had lots of experiences sorting by shape, size and colour. This week we will look at comparing by amount.

Vocabulary to use at home
More than, fewer than (less than, same as, groups, sets, greater

Weeks 6 and 7

Objectives- To find number bonds for numbers up to 6. To be able to create number

                     bonds to make 7-10.

In week 6, we are looking at how to decompose 6 is different ways and represent this in number bond diagrams. See the image below for an example. In week 7, we will build on this and look at number bonds for numbers 7-10.

Key vocabulary to use at home
Part, part whole, number bond diagram, altogether, group, set, how many, more, fewer, same, different
