Grow, Persevere, Succeed. Be the best you can be!
At Grange Primary School, we follow the Charanga English Model Music Curriculum Scheme. This is aligned with the National Curriculum for Music an the non-statutory Model Music Curriculum (MMC) Guidance published by the DfE In 2021.
The scheme provides clearly sequenced units and lesson plans with a clear learning progression. The scheme follows a spiral approach to musical learning, with children revisiting, building and extending their knowledge and skills incrementally. Because of this, children's learning is consolidated and augmented, increasing musical confidence.
The Charanga Scheme follows a spiral approach to musical learning, with children revisiting, building and extending their knowledge and skills incrementally. In this manner, their learning is consolidated and augmented, increasing musical confidence and enabling them to go further.
Music plays a role in every aspect of our lives, wherever and whoever we are. For this reason, the academic year is divided into six units, each corresponding with one of our six recurring Social Questions, combined with a unique Musical Spotlight.
Each unit is structured into six steps making up 6 weekly lessons. The first step of each unit introduces that unit’s focus in terms of content, skills and knowledge; the middle steps then develop this, and the final, sixth step assesses the learning through exciting performances and activities.
At the centre of each step – each lesson – is a song around which the musical learning is centred. Throughout each song and step, pupils will participate in listening, singing, performing, composing and improvising exercises.
Music substantive knowledge is learning based on the notation, notes, pulse, dynamics, structure, rhythm, pitch, tempo, timbre and texture of different musical pieces.
Disciplinary musical knowledge is based around the core pillars of the music curriculum;: technical, constructive, progressive. This is demonstrated in the Charanga scheme using the musical processes: composition and improvisation, listening and responding and performing (including singing).
SEND Statement
Grange Primary promotes a curriculum that puts all pupils, regardless of their needs, at the heart of what we do. By building mutual respect, we accept others for their differences believing that everyone is special and everyone has something to offer. Our inclusive and enriching curriculum, written for all children, provides pupils with meaningful and aspirational experiences as well as promoting personal growth for life-long learning. When the curriculum needs adapting to suit the needs of individual children, appropriate modifications are made by the class teacher with support from the SENDCo and the Curriculum Subject Lead.
