Children's Responsibilities

Welcome to Grange Primary School Council

Why do we have a School's Council?
School Council is a great opportunity for pupils to get more involved in the way the school is run. The School Council gives pupils a chance to voice their ideas and feelings and influence any decisions that are made.

Our Members for 2024-2025 will be elected soon!

What do we do?
Members of the Council take part in discussions and votes and also feed back any relevant information to their class. They are often requested to ask their class for ideas or take class votes relating to discussions by the Council.  The members all have a School Council notebook.  This is used to write down suggestions from their peers to discuss in the meetings and make notes on what to feedback to their classmates after the meetings.

What have we done so far?
The School's Council has discussed ideas for play-time and lunch-time, including what games should be played and what equipment should be bought and how to make things run more smoothly.  This resulted in a rota being made for each year group to access the timber trail. The feedback from this so far is that it is working really well.

  • The pupils decided children should come to school wearing either own clothes, something colourful or fancy dress to raise awareness for Children in Need.  The members judged a Pudsey colouring competition throughout school.
  • The pupils have been involved in choosing the items on our school lunch menus.
  • We have worked with our Trust Parliament Members to look at making our school more sustainable.  We focused on reducing waste paper in school, saving electricity and trying to reduce the amount of food wasted at lunch times.
  • All school council children now proudly wear a badge so they can be identified by their peers and staff.

The NLLT Trust Parliament Members

James and Mia from Year 6 were our school's first members of the NLLT Trust Parliament.  Throughout the year they met with the parliament members from other schools in our Trust.  The focus this year was on making our school more sustainable.  As described above, we focused on reducing wastage in our school.  James and Mia also visited a local windfarm where they learnt all about the science behind sustainable energy.  Just before the summer, they also visited London for a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament.  They learnt about the history of democracy in the UK whilst going in the House of Lords and House of Commons!  Here is a link to a video documenting their visit: Trust Parliament visit to London | Grange Primary School (primarysite.media)
