Counting Collections and Turbo Maths

On a Wednesday we carry out our Counting Collections session.  It aims to support children's counting, subitising, comparison of number and composition of number. It will also help the children to represent numbers in different ways and estimate.

The children work in talk partners, choose a collection of objects from our counting library, plan how to count it and work together to count the objects. They then record the amount in their own way on paper/whiteboards.

The counting library can also be accessed during play time inside the classroom.

On an afternoon (Monday to Thursday) the children have their 'Turbo Maths' sessions.

We use animations and guidance from Number Sense to support the children to recognise quantities instantly (subitising) and to recognise quantities within larger amounts (composition).

This lesson provides a great opportunity to develop early maths skills which will support the children to learn number facts as they move through KS1. It also promotes speech and language skills as the children talk about what they notice and what they know with their talk partner and adults.
